Heat-treating is the giving of a precise warmth- and humiditytreatment of which boltingproblems are eliminated. This process needs to be continued for certain period to get the desired effect. For instance for "STUTTGARTER" this period is only 10 weeks but for "RED BARON" 20 weeks.

Not all types need heat-treatment because with a lot of types the percentage bolters in second-years are minimal. For number of types it is indispensable. Nowadays there are also companies who ask for heat-treatment in other types which do not need heat-treatment. It appears that heat-treatment also gives a much higher yield of sometimes more than 20%
The only disadvantage is that heat-treatment makes the crop later than when there would have been planted non-treated sets.
